Phantom Canyon Brewmaster Alan Stiles Intros Phantom Canyon’s New “Revival Series” 03.09.10
Debuting Wednesday, March 3rd is the first in a series of beers based on recipes culled from the brewing logs of British breweries, both operating and defunct, as well as modern interpretations of ancient, rare and vanishing beers from Europe. We’ll be brewing one a month until we run out of recipes.
Brewer's Association Announces 2009 Craft Brewer Sales Numbers 03.08.10
The Brewer's Association today released 2009 stats on the U.S. Craft Brewing Industry. In 2009, U.S. beer sales overall were down approximately 5 million barrels or 2.2%. Imported beer sales were down 9.8% in 2009. However, the craft brewing industry saw their sales increase by 10.3% over 2008 sales.

The total number of craft brewers in the U.S. also grew, from 1485 in 2008 to 1585 that were operating for some or all of 2009. That was good news for those of us who like to drink craft beer, with an increase of 613,922 barrels.

What an exciting time to be involved in the craft brewing movement. At a time when our country is struggling to emerge from the “Great Recession”, and dollars are tight for many, people still want to support small, local breweries, and sip their fine hand-crafted brew.
Wynkoop's Beer Drinker of the Year 03.03.10
At Denver’s Wynkoop Brewing Company, William (Bill) Howell, a Sterling, Alaska college administrator, retired Navy officer, homebrewer, and beer educator was crowned Beer Drinker of the Year. In 2007 he created a new course for Kenai Peninsula College entitled The Art and History of Brewing, and has traveled extensively across Alaska and the West in pursuit of great beer. He also serves as an ally for various beer retailers and journalists, and blogs about his state’s rich beer culture.

One of three national finalists at Wynkoop competing for the 2010 title, Howell withstood 2 hours of difficult beer-related questions from a panel of national beer experts to win the 14th annual title. He wins free beer for life at Wynkoop, a $250 bar tab at his favorite brewpub (Elias Brewing Company in Soldotna, AK), unmatched beer-lover glory and other prizes for winning the title. Go
here for more info.
San Luis Valley Anniversary 03.03.10

Starting Saturday, and running all week, you can get a pint of this new brew, or any of the others on tap, for $2.50 a pint. 1 Down, 2 To Go - HB-1186 Defeated 02.24.10
House Bill 1186, sponsored by Republican State Representative Larry Liston of Colorado Springs, was defeated soundly by a 3-8 vote in the Colorado House Finance Committee today. Rep. Liston, disappointed with the outcome, commented that liquor stores, "will never compromise because they have a monopoly and they will keep it until hell freezes over". Additionally, Liston remarked that "the legislature kicked the can down the road again," no doubt referring to the conundrum that is 3.2 beer.

Eric Wallace of Lefthand Brewing was encouraged, but not ecstatic. Wallace's tempered response recognizes that two additional moves to alter liquor laws in Colorado, HB-1279 (the grocery-store bill) and another initiative, still exist on the horizon.

The Beer Drinker's Guide to Colorado will have a story elaborating upon the downfall of HB-1186 and the other proposed measures in the coming days. Stay tuned!
Proposed Legislation to Alter
Craft Beer Landscape
02.22.10
Be an advocate for Colorado Craft Beer. The Brewers Guild is urging all Colorado Craft Beer lovers to call and email their legislators now through February 24. On that day, the Colorado Legislature House Finance Committee will hear HB 1186 which would allow convenience stores to sell full strength beer. This bill would dramatically change the Colorado beer landscape by allowing corporate store beer buyers to control the majority of shelf space decisions within these outlets. Go to www.coloradobeer.org and let your voice be heard.
New Brewery Alert!
Rifle Brewing Co. & Bierworks
02.22.10
Rifle Brewing Company, located in the restaurant Sammy's On Park Avenue started brewing beer, and had their Grand Opening in January, 2010. They are listed on The Beer Drinker's Guide To Colorado, so check there for hours of operation, etc. or go to riflebrew.com. Brewmaster Todd Malloy has lots of plans to bring more great brews to the Western Slope.

Bierwerks plans to open late Spring, early Summer in Woodland Park. Jeff Aragon and Brian Horton, previously of Trinidad Brewing Company, are teaming up again to bring some fine beers up high to Woodland Park. “We really want this to have a community feel for the people of Woodland Park, as well as a great place to stop when you're headed up or down the pass” Jeff said. They plan to serve a wide range of beers, mostly German style, with plans to bottle eventually.
As the Brewers Turn 02.22.10
There is a shift that has occurred with several brewers on the Southern Front Range, and it has nothing to do with tectonic plates. Andy Bradley has left Phantom Canyon Brewing Company to head the new Colorado Mountain Brewery on the NorthEast side of Colorado Springs. Alan Stiles moved north from Shamrock Brewing Company to fill Andy's place at Phantom Canyon. And Shamrock now has Jason Beuhler as Head Brewer, previously the assistant brewer at Rockyard Brewing Company in Castle Rock. Several other shifts are happening as well. As always, we will keep you posted.
Rockyard Soon to Bottle 02.22.10
Rockyard Brewing Company in Castle Rock is opening up a bottling facility in an existing warehouse near the brewpub. They will soon be able to bottle all their main line beers in 12 oz. bottles to sell in 6 packs. They will still bottle their specialty and seasonal beers in 22 oz. bombers. Congratulations Rockyard. We will be looking for it in our favorite liquor stores soon.
Changing of the Guard 11.02.09
Andy Bradley, the head brewer at Phantom Canyon Brewing, has retired his beer-soaked boots at the downtown Colorado Springs establishment to brew suds up north at the Colorado Mountain Brewery. Filling those boots will be Alan Stiles from Pueblo's Shamrock Brewing. The Beer Drinker's Guide to Colorado wishes both brewers the best of luck with their new endeavors.
New Brewery Alert!
Asher Brewing Company
10.29.09
Their brewery license finally came through, and on Thursday, October 22, Asher Brewing Company, the newest Boulder brewery, fired up the kettles for their first brew of Green Bullet IPA. “We got the news just as we were about to sample a fine brew up at Tommy Knockers in Idaho Springs. The taste became a toast and Chris and I did the Hoppy Dance!” said Steve Turner, co-owner and co-brewer of Asher Brewing, along with Chris Asher. “We are very excited and can't wait to knock out our first batch.” The other beer they started with is Tree Hugger Organic Wheat.

Asher Brewing intends to be the first organic brewery in Colorado. “95% of the ingredients are organic” said Chris. “All of the malts, and most of the hops”. Packaging plans are to start with kegs and bombers, then move on to canning. A tasting room is being made ready. As soon as they receive their state license they will be able to sell, hopefully in a few weeks. Back Country Pizza in Nederland has been eagerly awaiting Ashers' organic brew. The plan is to hit the streets and see where else they can place it. Good Luck Asher Brewing!

Horsefly Brewery in Montrose Opens Today

The residents of Montrose now have another brewery where they can wet-their-whistle. Self-proclaimed as the smallest microbrewery in Colorado (we think Purgatory and Ourayle House might actually be smaller), Horsefly Brewery opens it's doors today to an anxious public. Wielding brews through a barrel-and-a-half brewing system, Nigel Askew, and partner Melanie Freismuth already have four beers currently on tap, including a Blonde Ale, an American Pale Ale, an Amber Ale, and some Scottish brew! Next week they're thinking maybe a Porter and something with an Imperial moniker. If you live in Montrose, your probably already there. But if your passing through, be sure to stop by and support another addition to the wide and diverse microbrewery population here in Colorado!

Horsefly Brewing Company, 2320 E. Main St., Montrose, CO. 1 970-249-6889. Hours: Monday-Friday 4:00pm-10:00pm, Saturday 2:00pm-10:00pm, Sunday 1:00pm-6:00pm.

Arctic Craft Brewery Closes Doors 5.13.09
May 13, 2009

Legal and financial partnership issues have frozen all operations at Arctic Craft Brewery.

John Dunfee, Head Brewer, confirmed today that he had filed his final Brewer’s Operations tax notice with the State of Colorado.

He is done with brewing, at least for now. And Arctic's range of outstanding beers and ales will flow no more from their low-key taps and brewery facility in Colorado Springs.

A disagreement amongst partners in Arctic Craft Brewery has led the shut-down. Dunfee and partner Nick Brunetti opened the brewery operation in 2006.

A few local retailers have what is the last of Arctic’s foray in the beer cooler: 12-ounce cans of On-On Pale Ale, packaged and sold aggressively in 8-packs.

The fate of Arctic Craft is in the hands of attorneys. Dunfee anticipates some kind of resolution in 15 days.

We will keep you posted.
Boulder Beer Releases 30th Anniversary
Commemorative Brew
4.29.09
Boulder, CO – 4/29/09 – Paying homage to their roots and toasting their milestone 30th Anniversary, Boulder Beer Company will celebrate by releasing their new Flashback Anniversary Ale in May. They will tap the first kegs on Tuesday, May 5th at a roll-out party at the brewery from 4:00 – 7:00pm. The commemorative brew will be available in 6-packs and on draft through September in all markets where Boulder Beer Company brands are sold.

An India Brown Ale, Flashback is single-hopped with five separate additions of Cascade hops. Citrusy with a prominent hop aroma, Flashback finishes clean, crisp and dry, with dark roasted flavors from the biscuit and chocolate malts perfectly complimenting the bountiful Cascades. Highly hopped like an IPA but dark and roasty like a Brown, Flashback is a very sophisticated and unique brew.

Boulder Beer Company plans to serve Flashback Anniversary Ale at events throughout the summer, culminating with their 30th Anniversary Celebration which is planned for mid-September.

Flash back to 1979 and you’ll find two professors at the University of Colorado in Boulder longing for the full-flavored tastes of the British ales they had grown to love while traveling overseas. Testing the entrepreneurial waters with a little project called a microbrewery, they began brewing and selling a few of their own. There begins the tale of Boulder Beer Company, Colorado’s First Microbrewery. From the original Bitter, Porter and Stout recipes that founded the brewery to their exciting new releases, Boulder Beer continues to uphold their tradition of innovation in brewing.

Moderate drinking may help build bone density 3.26.09
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who enjoy a glass or two of wine or beer every day could be helping to keep their bones strong, new research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests. However, drinking more -- and choosing hard liquor instead of wine or beer -- may actually weaken bones, Dr. Katherine Tucker of Tufts University in Boston and her colleagues found. Boulder Beer Company “Mixin’ It Up”
with the Brewer’s Dozen
3.16.09
Boulder, CO – Beginning this Spring, Boulder Beer Company will roll-out in phases a new version of their Brewer’s Dozen mixed 12-pack.  This new package will include beers from their extremely successful Looking Glass Series.  The Brewer’s Dozen will always include four different beers: Hazed & Infused, MoJo India Pale Ale, Sweaty Betty Blonde wheat beer, and a rotating seasonal Looking Glass Series selection.  The packaging will also feature newly updated vibrant artwork that will be sure to catch consumers’ attention on the shelf.  (Yes, the Hazed, MoJo and Betty labels are backwards…it’s a mirror-image!)

In 2001, Boulder Beer’s Looking Glass Series of beers was born with the first small batch of Hazed & Infused, brewed and named by a longtime brewer at Boulder Beer.  Hazed was completely different from their traditional heritage brands.  The hazy, unfiltered appearance and the intense aroma and flavors of the infused dry-hop additions created a much bolder beer than anything else in their line-up at the time.  Seizing the opportunity, they released Hazed in its own unique packaging to reflect that much bigger taste and aroma inside the bottle and opened the door to a whole new line of beers called their Looking Glass Series.  Eight years later, there are now nine beers in this series.  These beers all have bigger, more intense flavor profiles than the traditional Boulder Beer heritage brands, and to reflect that, the Looking Glass Series’ packaging has very colorful, bold, bright artwork.

Founded in 1979, Boulder Beer Company received the 43rd brewing license in the country, establishing them as Colorado’s First Microbrewery.  From the original English-Style Ales that founded the brewery to the exciting new releases in their Looking Glass Series, Boulder Beer continues to uphold their tradition of innovation in brewing.

If you would like additional information about Boulder Beer Company and the new Brewer’s Dozen package, please contact Tess McFadden at tmcfadden@boulderbeer.com, or call 303.444.8448 x29.
Boulder Beer Company First to
Adopt a Boulder Bike Path
2.26.09
Boulder, CO – 2/26/09

This year, Boulder Beer Company became the first group in Boulder to officially adopt a city bike path, taking on the responsibility of maintaining a portion of the Goose Creek Trail between 30th Street and Foothills Parkway.  This portion of the trail lies just south of Boulder Beer Company, and is frequently used by company employees and visitors to access the brewery. As part of the city’s newly created Adopt-A-Path program, Boulder Beer has committed to maintain the path and surrounding areas through voluntary clean-up patrols organized by company employees.

Boulder Beer believes that cleaner bike paths will promote cleaner transportation throughout the city. Additionally, the company takes many other steps to encourage sustainable transportation, including providing RTD Eco-Pass benefits for all employees, and allowing employees to take pre-tax dollars from their paychecks to pay for other environmentally-friendly transportation methods such as organized van and carpools.

Boulder Beer Company Brewmaster David Zuckerman is one of the company’s many employees that takes daily advantage of using Boulder’s bike paths for his commute to work.  During his daily rides, he noticed that this particular portion of the trail seemed to be a trouble-spot for garbage and pollution due to the high levels of car traffic on 30th Street and Foothills Parkway.  Therefore, Zuckerman approached the City of Boulder to inquire about the possibility of Boulder Beer adopting the path.

“The bike paths throughout town are an amazing benefit to Boulder’s residents,” said Zuckerman. “Many of us here at the brewery have used these paths for years for our commute to work. In order to make sure that we can continue to use the paths for years to come, we all need to play our part in helping to maintain them.

”Boulder Beer considers the city’s strong culture of biking and sustainability to be a very important part of the company’s own long-standing culture and history within Boulder. In fact, adopting Boulder’s first bike path is not Boulder Beer’s only claim to being first at something— Boulder Beer Company officially holds the title of Colorado’s FIRST Microbrewery, and this year celebrates its 30th Anniversary of craft brewing.

Brewers Association Announces 2008
Craft Brewer Sales Numbers
2.23.09
Boulder, CO – Monday, February 23, 2009

The Brewers Association, which tabulates industry growth data for U.S. breweries, announced that today’s small independent craft brewers are gaining alcohol market share due to a shift toward full flavor beer and increased support for local breweries. From 2007 to 2008, estimated sales by craft brewers were up 5.8 percent by volume and 10.5 percent in dollars. Overall share of the beer category from craft brewers was 4.0 percent of production and 6.3 percent of retail sales. More than 1 million new barrels of beer were sold in 2008, and close to half of those barrels were beer from craft brewers.

Beer's popularity as America's favorite fermented beverage continued in 2008 with Gallup stating "beer is back to a double-digit lead over wine." Taking into account the challenges in today's economy, BevincoNielsen released a survey showing beer was faring better than spirits, with wine lagging. The Brewers Association emphasized trading across from wine and spirits to beer continues, with some of today's wine drinkers discovering the affordable enjoyment and rewards of craft beer.

These increases in share and barrels for craft brewers come at a time when, according to the Brewers Association, the cost of operating a small brewery increased over 39 percent in the period of November 2007 to November 2008. The Brewers Association states that today's craft brewers face many challenges including:

* Access to ingredients and raw materials
* Increased pricing for materials and supplies
* Access to market (competition for shelf space at the retail level)
